About the Beans
The Story
Ricarte Rojas Oblitas - Gesha
Single Origin Coffee | Gesha | Peru
Coffee is still finding its footing in Peru’s remote Amazonas department, where the sheer size and isolation of the average farm has historically kept single-lot coffee out of reach.
Ricarte Rojas Oblitas is one of the growers changing that, farming in the Cajamarca region at 1,750 metres, on the edge of Peru’s high Andean cloud forest.
His farm covers just 0.75 hectares, yet it holds around 3,200 Gesha trees, tended under his own technical guidance from cherry to cup. Ricarte conserves the forest cover on his land, makes his own compost from farm remnants, and takes an active role in his community’s environmental stewardship.
Cherries are hand-picked and de-pulped on the same day, fermented in open air for 12 to 18 hours, then washed clean of mucilage and dried on raised beds until ready.
Look for notes of dried apricot, milk chocolate, and stewed nectarine, with a bright, tangy acidity and good sweetness.
