Ethiopia Kochere – Jabanto Producers Washed (Single Origin)
Coffee beans roasted at Welcome Dose Specialty Coffee, Rosebery
This washed process single origin comes from the highland village of Biloya, nestled deep in the Kochere district of Ethiopia’s famed Gedeo zone. But this isn’t just any Yirgacheffe-area coffee — it’s the product of the Jabanto group, a rare and inspiring co-operative made up entirely of smallholder farmers determined to reclaim ownership over their craft.
Formed in 2017, the Jabanto group began with 29 farmers from Yirgacheffe and Kochere. Facing a system that had long limited direct trade access for small-scale growers, they joined forces to build a new path forward. Today, Jabanto has grown to 87 members, most of whom farm less than seven hectares each. Together, they’ve built a grassroots network focused on quality, transparency, and the kind of coffee that speaks clearly of its origin.
Each Jabanto farmer contributes ripe cherries grown at elevations of 1800–1950 masl in the nutrient-rich red soils of Kochere. The group uses traditional washed process methods refined with exceptional care: cherries are sorted by hand, pulped using local Agard machines, then fermented in clean water for 48 hours. After a brief soak, the parchment is gently dried on raised beds, with sun and shade carefully balanced to preserve clarity and consistency.
This lot is a shining example of what Ethiopia Kochere coffee can be — delicate, structured, and deeply expressive. At Welcome Dose in Rosebery, we roast these beans with intention: light enough to honour the origin, yet developed to unlock the full spectrum of stone fruits, warm spices and brown sugar
